it's like 9/11. >> yesterday, my school is never going to be the same. >> we're going to come back. >> a small town in mourning tonight after a school tragedy in connecticut. today we learned the names of the 20 children that were killed and how they died. we also see how resilient people are in the community are as they face the holidays in the shadow of this massacre. i'm ama daetz. the shooter killed 12 girls and eight boys and six adults were also killed. those that lost their lives in the shooting. >> anguished residents of

newtown struggled to cope with the loss of so many to evil. connecticut's governor paid tribute to the victims. >> those educators and those innocent little boys and girls were taken from their families far too soon. >> it seems almost nowhere are emotions running stronger at makeshift memorial 500 yards from the elementary school where people remember. >> people carried flowers and honored the people that died in friday's massacre. still under intense investigation. >> the detectives will certainly analyze everything and put a complete picture together. >> officials say they recovered very good evidence that may provide answers about what triggered friday's horrifying chain of events. adam lanza shot his mother and then headed to the elementary school and armed with weapons like high powered pistols and

semi utility assault rifle. they have completed the task of identifying the victims including the teacher who threw herself in front of the gunman to shield her students and principal who tried to stop the rampage and paid with her life. among the many children, 6-year-old emily parker remembered today by her father. >> we now know that all of the children who lost their lives were just six or seven years old all first graders, just barely beginning their lives. >> 27-year-old vicky soto was a substitute teacher. family members say they agonized for hours wondering what happened to her. >> at that point was the hardest for the whole family, just a

waiting game. to get word on what happened. >> vicky had her students huddled behind her in a closet protecting her from the gunman when she was shot and killed. other victims is 30-year-old lauren russo. mary was the school sigh skol colonel gist. vicky soto the substitute teacher who died shielding her students is being honored tonight. she will never be forgotten by one of her students who doesn't know her fate. >> she really loved us. i hope she is okay. i hope it's not her, i kept saying. you know she has been hurt but he doesn't know the end result.

they are one of the lucky families, both their children survived. the father of the gunman has released a statement saying his family is grieving along with all of those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy. the connecticut tragedy has touched a nerve across the country and vigils honoring are springing up everywhere.e of thl who attended sandy hook elementary. in san francisco city sper organized a vigil. it was the corner of silver avenue and mission street. speakers talked about workers together to bring about peace and addressing the issue with people with w mental health needs. a previously scheduled gun buy-back program, hundreds of guns were bought by oakland and san francisco police.

that community thinks something about gun violence. >> people started lining up in their cars at 6:00 a.m. to turn in guns at st. benedict church. this is where oakland police were buying the guns. >> we have every anticipation exceeding all expectations today. >> initial target was taking 500 guns but financial incentive helped bring the people out. >> money. >> $200 was paid for a each gun. a limit of three weapons for each resident and people had to move they resided in the city. oakland and san francisco police departments is going to be asking the governor to make this kind of gun buy-back a state program. >> you can stay with "abc 7 news" for continuing coverage. laura anthony will have live reports from connecticut beginning tomorrow.

a bay area scientist says he may know why thousands of squid have been washing up on shores. a scientist says the mass beaching happening during red tides. the algae releases a strong toxin, in large enough. in small doses they intoxicate the fish and swim up on show. >> bloomberg reports that kroger and walmart are among the companies that want the twinkie maker assets.

hillary clinton is being mowtd by doctors after a health scare. it's expected to keep her from testifying at a much anticipated chilly hearing. david curly has the story from washington. >> hillary clinton returned from her latest trip. she came back with a stomach virus according to her staff, an illness compounded earlier this week. secretary reportedly became dehydrated fainted at her home and in the fall suffered a concussion. she did not go to the hospital but is being monitored by her doctors. this is the second time a stomach bug has led to fainting. then senator clinton during a speech eight years ago. she admitted to barbara walters her schedule is grueling. >> are you exhausted? >> i am. to be honest i am. when i do something, i want to do it to the best of my ability. >> this illness will keep the secretary home this week meaning

she will not testify about the terrorist attack on the u.s. mission in benghazi which took the life of ambassador creation stevens and three others. the report is set to be released early in the week and her testimony was highly anticipated. >> clinton is expected to retire as secretary of state in the next few weeks. abc news has learned that the president will nominate john kerry to take her place. he became the front-runner when susan rice withdraw from the race. >> some rain today. >> we've quite a bit. mainly light rain. it's been cold, only in the mid to upper 40s around here. here look from vollmer peak cam, west towards san francisco. bay bridge and holiday lights in the embarcadero. we are actually seeing just a

little bit of light rain picking up new showers north of golden gate bridge. you can see santa rosa, northward towards cloverdale. earlier this evening, scattered showers across much of the bay area but that has burned on towards the south. this is what i'm talking about, cloverdale down to windsor, santa rosa picking up showers. rohnert park and adobe road and petaluma. to the west you'll find light showers. this is what is going to with us off and on this evening. temperature-wise, it is still cool out there, temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. here is a look at forecast. cold showers overnight. scattered showers off and on for sunday. a little bit of a break and look for more rain to develop as we head into sunday night and monday and off-and-on rain showers expected for much of

next week. lows tonight will be in the mid to low 30s, snow levels, higher peaks could see one-four inches of snow. elsewhere, look for temperatures in the 40s. this is satellite radar composite. this is the system that moved through earlier in the day. weak cold front, it has pushed into southern california. this a little bit of break we're in right now but we still have quite a bit of moisture. this is going to slide south. overnight and definitely throughout the day tomorrow. saturday night, you can see some of the light showers making their way across the bay area. you can definitely see a few scattered showers. we'll see sun breaks as well but it looks like it will be tomorrow night, 9:00 when the next wave of rain will move in and that will mean rain in time

for the monday morning commute. winter weather advisory, snow above 2500 feet. two to four inches of snow possible in those elevations. highs for sunday, chance of scattered showers and accu-weather forecast. temperature-wise, not much warming tomorrow. we'll still be chilly. upper 40s to low 50s. we'll look for maybe a hint of sun near watsonville and gilroy. here is a look at seven-day forecast. we'll see scattered showers for sunday, rain likely on monday, a few lingering showers. wednesday we actually be a dry day. then thursday, larger storm system moves in to bring a series of heavy rain and gusty winds. thursday night, friday, even into next weekend looks good. mike is here with sports. warriors on fire. >> they are not wet.
